Salman Khan, Shah Rukh, Saif Ali Khan - on-screen heroes, off-screen villains?

As Salman Khan appears in the court for 2002 hit-and-run case once again on July 24th, we find out all that glitters is definitely not gold when it comes to Bollywood's super stars - Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan Saif Ali khan, John Abraham and few others. With popularity comes huge responsibility, especially when a nation sees them as icons who inspire. But sadly, while these actors excelled on-screen, their off-screen roles deteriorated. Enjoying their demi god status, these superstars in trouble with the law rarely suffered a dent in popularity.
These superstars' misgivings have grown in number over the years. Salman Khan who has more misgivings to his credit - from 2002 hit-and-run case to 2006 black-buck case, is the one who stumbles upon controversies more often than his other contemporaries. However, of late, Shah Rukh Khan is giving him tough competition as well, Saif too is close to SRK's heels.
Here's a look at Bollywood actors who have got into serious trouble with criminal charges and have often been embroiled in controversy.

In April 2006, John Abraham had rammed his Yamaha Hayabusa motorbike into a cycle, injuring two people in the accident and was accused of rash and negligent driving. Four years later, a magistrate's court had in 2010 sentenced him to 15 days simple imprisonment and fined him Rs. 15,000. He had appealed in a sessions court and obtained bail. Police detained him immediately after a sessions court rejected his plea against the simple imprisonment and fine. He was later granted bail on a surety of Rs. 20,000.

On 28 September 2002, Salman Khan was arrested for rash and negligent driving. A Toyota Land Cruiser allegedly driven by Salman Khan rammed into a pavement in Mumbai killing one person injuring four others as they were sleeping on the pavement.

He is now charged for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. If proven guilty on Monday he may face jail terms up to 10 years.

On 17 February 2006, Khan was sentenced to one year in prison for killing two endangered Chinkaras and two Black Bucks in Jodhpur. On 10 April 2006, he was handed a five year jail term and remanded to Jodhpur jail until 13 April when he was granted bail. In August 2011 the court directed the actor to remain present during the proceedings.

Actor Fardeen Khan in 2001 was remanded to Narcotics Control Bureau custody for being accused of carrying illegal amounts of cocaine. Khan then claimed he had attempted to buy only one gram of cocaine. In 2011 he heaved a sigh of relief as the court decided to try him for only attempting to buy cocaine, dropping the graver charge of possessing over two grams of the drug that carried a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail.

In 1998, Saif Ali Khan was charged with poaching two black bucks during the filming of 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' along with co-stars Salman Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam. Now new charges have been filed against the actor. More recently Saif Ali Khan was arrested on Feb 22, 2012 for allegedly assaulting an NRI while dining with his friends. NRI Iqbal Sharma, who suffered a fractured nose, filed a police complaint and Saif was summoned by the police. Soon after surrender Saif was released on bail. Soon after this he got embroiled in a heated exchange with security staff at the Lucknow airport.

During IPL 5, Shah Rukh was banned from Wankhede Stadium for a brawl during KKR's match. The actor had got into a scuffle with security personnel and had also threatened an MCA official following which the cricket association decided to impose a five-year ban.

Shiney Ahuja's maid accused him of rape. He was arrested in June 2009 when the maid lodged a complaint against him. The actor spent over three-and-a-half months in jail. The trial court sentenced Shiney to seven years' rigorous imprisonment in 2011, relying on circumstantial evidence, though the complainant had turned hostile and changed her statement during the trial. He is now out on bail and cannot leave the country without the court's permission.
