Aashiqui 2 sails smoothly amidst Iron Man 3 fever!

Indian Premiere League season 6 plus the release of third installment of Hollywood’s much celebrated franchise ‘Iron Man’, are good enough factors to give jitters to a film like ‘Aashiqui 2’ with no face value. To our pleasant surprise however, the sequel to Bhatt’s camp super successful musical flick ‘Aashiqui’ has managed to sail through with flying colours.
Film critic and trade expert Taran Adarsh informs, “‘Aashiqui 2’ has started with a bang! Despite starring relative newcomers, the film has grossed a massive figure in its opening weekend. The business in mass-dominated circuits was fantastic, but was affected in metros due to ‘Iron Man 3’. Yet, all said and done, the weekend total is superb. It has collected approx. Rs 20.50 cr nett in its opening weekend. Breakup: Friday Rs. 6.25 cr, Sat Rs. 6.75 cr, Sun Rs. 7.50 cr.”
Citing good word of mouth to be reason behind the success, Bollywood trade analyst Joginder Tuteja reveals, “Predictions came true to the T for ‘Aashiqui 2’ as the film ended up enjoying a 40% opening for itself. This was pretty much on the cards after the music caught on well amongst the audience and results were there to be seen as film saw an incremental footfall for itself during the weekend. The fact that it was found decent to good response, both from audience as well as critics, meant that the word of mouth stayed positive as well, hence allowing this Mohit Suri directed film to breathe easy. Also, with relative newcomers like Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, it is also the best that a film of this budget, size and scale has fetched at the box office.”
He goes on to add, “Another film which ended up bringing joy for distributors, exhibitors, audience as well as trade in general was ‘Iron Man 3’. A biggie of mammoth proportion, it too went from strength to strength after celebrating with an opening day of over seven crores. With weekend collections of approx Rs. 25 crores, the film is huge by all means as it worked across all languages (English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu) with response for the 3D version being excellent. The film would be further enjoying a longer stay for itself since there is no major Hollywood competition at the Indian screens for many more weeks to come.”
As per the reports of IMDb.com, despite receiving mixed review, Mohit Suri directed musical love story ‘Aashiqui 2’ is giving tough competition to same day release ‘Iron Man 3’. The movie was released in more than 2,800 screens. It is expected that the film would make a good total in the coming days. ‘Aashiqui 2’ would have done much better business if ‘Iron Man 3’ not have released in India on the same day. The on-going IPL is another factor for the less occupancy in theatres.
Trade expert and film critic Vinod Mirani concludes, “‘Aashiqui 2’ has done very well through its first weekend to collect Rs. 17.75 crore. ‘Ek Thi Daayan’ collects Rs. 23.1 crore in its first week. The general feeling from public being the film needed at least one popular female face out of the three featured in the film.”
