Punjabi music beyond just bhangra: Bali Sagoo

Punjabi music beyond just bhangra: Bali Sagoo

Singer Bali Sagoo, who reigned over the pop music scene in the 1990s, rues that Punjabi music has limited its identity to loud bhangra songs.

According to the 49-year-old, Punjabi music has a lot of potential -- more than just churning out over-the-top dance numbers.

"Punjabi music does not always need to be bhangra, it can be of different style as well. It needs to change with different styles and genres. I wish that people don't play only bhangra music when they want to listen to Punjabi music," Sagoo told.

"They have this thing abroad as well... they don't listen to a lot of other Punjabi music because they feel the music is the same. I tell them that it's not (like that)... It (Punjabi music) can be drums, R&B, or love songs," he added.

Sagoo, who divides his time and work between India and Britain, observes the changing taste of people who are being exposed to world music and appreciating it as well.

"I think they are opening up to different tunes. Thanks to television, radio, (social) media, they are listening to songs that are being listened around the world. We are at par with everything... The global music scene inspires me," he said.

Having given hit albums like "Wham Bam", "Magic Touch" and hit remix "Haye Jamalo", Sagoo says pop music should not compete with Bollywood songs.

"No one can compete with Bollywood - it is big, like a global virus. So why even go there? Many people like me have been doing music for so many years, should make more music and do it globally," he said.

The singer, who owns his own record label Fresh Dope Records, has come up with his latest album "Future Shock", which has music for every mood.

However, Sagoo rues the fact that Indian artists ultimately aim to become playback singers in movies.

"In India, there are not many role models... Everyone wants to become a playback singer. Most singers I talk to want to become a playback singer," he said.

Actress shares her fitness fundas, says she tries different workout routines to avoid boredom

`Rome wasn't built in a day now, was it?` asks Neha Dhupia when requested to share her fitness mantra. According to the model-turned-actress, being healthy shouldn't be a fad as the idea is to `build a temple out of your body` and it obviously takes time. In a candid chat, the leggy lass shares some fitness tips...

>> I have a really good set of people I work with on a daily basis. Getting the right kind of guidance makes a huge difference. There are different body types and each needs a different set of exercise regime.

They pointed out that my body requires cardiovascular routines and weight training. Cardio, to me, means anything from swimming to running. I also go through pilates and muscle-toning exercises. They are injury- free and help in strengthening your core and improving your postures.

>> I sign up for a lot of things so that workout doesn't become dull. Music in the background has to be upbeat so that there's energy around. Having said that, I'm not really a gym person. I like outdoor activities more. I play squash with my dad whenever I get time.

>> The key to continuous fitness is to make sure that you maintain the rhythm. In my profession, travelling can create an obstacle. So when I'm out of the city, I always carry a pair of sneakers and a yoga mat. This way, I can just go out for a run or settle down to perform my asanas. My yoga trainer, Vinayak, recently introduced me to the more classical forms and they yield amazing results.

>> Diet plays a significant part in your body's overall development. I don't know whether my dietician Pooja Makhija is nice enough or mean enough to literally wean me away from sugar! (Laughs) But I'm not complaining. She makes me have small meals every two hours.

>> Listen to your body and look for signs like you don't feel like hitting the road or lift weights. Sometimes you haven't slept well or your metabolism is weak, then it's very advisable to rest.

Guess Who: Producer smitten by his hot leading lady

Guess Who: Producer smitten by his hot leading lady

The producer of this upcoming flick seems to be in news within the industry circle, thanks to the rumours suggest his growing proximity with its leading lady whom he is launching

The actress, a well-known model, will be making her debut with the film.

Incidentally, the filmmaker's closeness with the actress came to the forefront when he insisted that the romantic track be part of the promos in spite of the flick being an actioneer.

Although the corporate house behind the film did not want the romance to be promoted, they gave in on the producer's insistence, as he wanted the film to have a `universal appeal`. No wonder that the corporate house and the producer do not see eye-to-eye at all.

One wonders if the producer is actually only thinking about the film or is it more than what meets the eye?

'Old Chashme Buddoor never died down'

`Old Chashme Buddoor never died down`

Veteran actress Deepti Naval, who is all set to release the digitally restored version of the original "Chashme Buddoor", has never felt that the film faded away from the viewers' mind.

"I feel that the old 'Chashme Buddoor' never died down. People have gone on watching it as it's repeatedly shown on TV. It never died out," she said at the launch of the promo of the restored film here Friday.

Excited to see the fresh print, she said: "It is rare that a film gets restored. It has brought all of us together once again."

Directed by Sai Paranjpye, the 1981 buddy film also had Farooque Shaikh, Rakesh Bedi and Ravi Baswani, among others.

Talking about her memories of shooting the film, she said she never felt they were "shooting" or "acting".

"I just remembered that we used to have fun... we were in such a comfort zone with each other. I didn't even know the ABC of acting at that time. But no one made me feel that I was just one-film-old," she added.

The old version will hit screens April 5 along with its remake, which has been directed by David Dhawan and stars Ali Zafar, Siddharth, Taapsee Pannu, and Divyendu Sharma.

Talking about Paranjpye's disapproval of Dhawan's remake, Naval said it is important to respect her feelings.

"I want to respect her feelings... she is concerned how her film will be remade. But I feel that the fact that David saab wants to make the film again is a compliment," she said.

Rakesh Bedi, who was also at the event, feels that the remake will lack the simplicity of the original.

"The simplicity won't be there. The innocence and that atmosphere will be missed. But I guess this is the requirement of today," he said.

Farooque Shaikh says people are often tempted to revisit something that is popular.

"We will only get to know what David Dhawan has made when we see it. But if something is popular, then to repeat it is a temptation. Also, if you have a readymade plot, you don't need to put much effort," he said.

There's nothing like a dream role

There`s nothing like a dream role

Be it action, comedy or drama, Bobby Deol has tried his hand at various genres over the 18 years that he has been in Bollywood -- he is still exploring and says there is nothing like a perfect role for an actor.

The 46-year-old debuted in 1995 with "Barsaat" and gave hits like "Ajnabee", "Soldier" and "Gupt".

"I'm still exploring the industry. I have grown up as an actor but I am in the learning phase. I'll never be satisfied," Bobby told.

Any particular role that he is looking forward to do?

"I feel there's nothing like a dream role for an actor. It should be a dream role for a viewer - something he wants to watch over and again. I love watching old masala films. Now we talk about new cinema. It's not new. It has been always there. So I am looking forward to do more of masala films, a perfect pack of action, comedy, romance," he said.

The actor was here on Friday afternoon to promote his forthcoming film, Sangeeth Sivan's directed "Yamla Pagla Deewana 2".

"For an actor, the journey always continues. It never stops. Before the release of each film, there's stress, anxiety and nervousness... but just one mistake and you are gone.

"I have never restricted myself. I am open to doing all kinds of films - action, thriller, romance and comedy. In fact, I have done many in the past. I am lucky to be born in the family of actors. My dad and brother keep advising me. And it helps," added the actor who was last seen in "Players" (2012).

His forthcoming film, a sequel to the 2011 hit comedy "Yamla Pagla Deewana", also stars Neha Sharma and Kristina Akheeva.

Why are Sonam's friends so angry at her

Why are Sonam`s friends so angry at her

Actress Sonam Kapoor is busy hopping from one movie set to another. Her busy schedule has upset her friends who are angry at her for not giving them time.

She has finished work on Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" and is tied up with director Aanand L. Rai's "Raanjhanaa" with Dhanush.

The actress is also working on Yash Raj Films' untitled project with Ayushmann Khurrana, for which she was shooting in the capital.

"I have a long list of complaints from my friends. I have been in Delhi since the beginning of this year. I was shooting 'Raanjhanaa' and then YRF's untitled next with Ayushmann," said Sonam in a statement.

But the 27-year-old is enjoying her work.

"Even now that I am back, after a day's break, I started shooting for the last schedule of 'Raanjhanaa'. I have been juggling between sets. It's been very hectic, but I am enjoying it," she said.

'I went through a very bad phase in Bollywood'

`I went through a very bad phase in Bollywood`

David Dhawan on his connection with the original 'Chashme Buddoor' and constantly updating himself as a director

Though the director has had a rather bad phase at the box office recently, trust David Dhawan to be always full of life. With his latest film Chashme Baddoor all set to hit the marquee soon, the director speaks about overcoming his ill luck and looking forward to a new chapter in his career.

You have managed to survive for over three decades in an industry where many directors have come and gone. How do you keep yourself updated?
My two sons (Rohit and Varun) are instrumental in that to a large extent. Kitne directors aaye aur chale gaye... When I came in 1976, my aim was to make films like Manmohan Desai. He was my guru. However I soon realised the importance of constantly updating myself.

I make films that are can change everything but you cannot change entertainment. If I don't change myself, the public will easily replace me. I know it is very difficult to survive.

You went through a very bad phase with your films flopping and Hook Ya Crook getting stuck...
Partner came in 2007 and was a big hit but after that I went through a very bad phase. But this is the industry and everyone goes through such times. When you are working with corporate houses, you don't know what's happening. Even Amitji's (Bachchan) film is ready and stuck.

I know that my film was very good but the producers did not release it. I even asked them to give me the film but they did not. I have forgotten about Hook Ya Crook and have moved on. I have made 40 films and one film won't affect my career.

Why re-make Chashme Buddoor?
I was signed by the producers to make a film and I was working on a subject but I was not very happy with it. Then they said they had this film as they had already taken the rights.

I was very excited, as the film was almost a part of my life. Rakesh Bedi and Ravi Baswani, the two actors in the original film were my roommates.

We used to stay as paying guests in Santacruz (East). I took over the project and writer-duo Sajid-Farhan gave me the first half. That's when I said I would make it. I based the film in Goa and made it very trendy and contemporary.

Was it difficult to cast actors for the film considering that the leads in the original film became icons?
To be very frank, apart from Farooque Shaikh and Deepti Naval, everyone was a newcomer and that's exactly what I did. The hero had two kaminey friends and that's what I retained in my film. I made the film very honestly and I did not think about the original film at all.

How much of the original have you retained?
I have retained around six to eight scenes from the original as I loved them and they can't be changed.

You are making a film with your son next?
Yes, that's a very selfish move on my part (laughs). The film has everything and I wanted to make it for my son Varun. Meanwhile, Rohit is making a film for Ramesh Taurani.

Romantic link-up helps you stay in the news: Amrita Rao

Romantic link-up helps you stay in the news: Amrita Rao

Amrita Rao who started her career with Shahid Kapoor's 'Ishq Vishq' way back in 2003, Did couple of successful films such as 'Main Hoon Na' with Shah Rukh Khan, 'Deewar' and Sooraj Barjatya's 'Vivaah', Comes backs with 'Jolly LLB', 'Singh Sahab The Great' and 'Satyagraha'. The Still-Cute looking actress who hold so many personalities in her one soul goes candid with Faisal Saif

Let's get started with you 'So-Far' Journey..
I think my journey so far has been very easy. And compared to so many actresses who come and struggle and see rejection and disappointment, I think i am on a bed of Petal. And i just feel very blessed that god has had the best of people coming to me with work which is a rare opportunity. And especially for someone like me who is not a part of the Film Industry.

Why do you follow the strategy of being seen so less?
I don't follow any Strategy. Since i don't have any 'God-Father' in the Bollywood, So i am very careful then being choosy. I understand that in 2010 my Port-Folio got little disrupted unintentionally and unplanned. But i have not decided that. Like how i didn't decide that i will sign 3 films this year. There is no intention behind doing lesser work. There was always an intention of doing good work.

And you were never in the league of Number One?
I think i have really got out of that phase where i was young and say that i wanted to be number one. Now that i realized that there is nothing called number one, Everybody is number one here. Because they all are different from each other and they all are doing different work. That is what it makes you happy and satisfying.

Why do you say 'Satyagraha' is an important film in your career?
I say 'Satyagraha' is an important film in my career because It is a film i believe i would be very proud of. The film has something to do with my personal sentiments. When the whole 'Anna Hazare' movement happened and people raised their voices, One felt very handicapped and disable sitting at home and not doing anything about it.

When you see an old man going on fast till death, When you see these people who actually taken a step to do something which we always wanted from our heart's to do. Being an actress to be a part of such a film which talks about current issues, would always make me feel proud.

What is it feels on working with Sunny Deol in Singh Sahab The Great?
Working with Sunny Deol was like seeing all those 'Action' in the real time which i used to see on big screen. Seeing his effort which he gives to knock that one punch, Was like an 'Oh My God' feeling. He really works very hard. It was a lot of fun watching Sunny Deol do Action in front of you.

Don't you think that you require a Romantic Link-Up, At least to boost up your PR Activity?
(Laughs). I definitely feel that having a romantic Link-Up or Flaunting your partner helps you keep in the 'News', But i have always kept a definite demarcation between my professional and personal life. My family and my personal life is very sacred to me and i don't want to make it a Daily-Soap opera for the whole world.

Do you have any personal favorite genre as an Actress?
I feel that i have always been fascinated by the 50's golden era of Bollywood. When i watch old Black and White films, I feel they had this particular flair and they were so Fashionable. Something about that era which was very different including the songs. I feel that in this age and time, If i get an opportunity to play a role of that era, I will gladly do it.

And what would be the Amrita Rao's fashion statement?
Fashion for me is being comfortable and confident about yourself. And you will be confident only if you are comfortable with what you are wearing.
