Vishal Bharadwaj is one of the most skilled and talented directors of the Hindi film industry. His films have a niche of their own and always reflect the greyer side of people and things that are core to their existence.
Omkara” has been one such film, for which the filmmaker got a brilliant response from the film fraternity, audience and the critics. Among all the characters that were at display in the film ‘Langda Tyagi’ is the one to remember. The character was played by Saif Ali Khan who had only been doing lighter roles in films and desperately wanted to do some challenging role. The film played a turning point in his career.
However, Vishal Bharadwaj who was recently interviewed at the NFDC Film Bazaar revealed that he had Aamir Khan in his mind initially for the role. The film “Omkara” that released in 2006 was based on Shakespeare’s “Othello”. He confessed saying that it was Aamir who had inspired him to make a movie on the lines of ‘Othello’, and he also said that Aamir was interested in playing the role of Langda Tyagi.
He also said that the two had been planning of doing a film together at that point which got shelved within a year due to differences.
Bhardwaj added “During that time I used to tell Aamir about this character Langda Tyagi and Othello, so he encouraged me to do something on it and said he will play that role. He told me to come to him after a year when the script is ready but this time I did not want to fall into his trap so I went to Saif.”
He continued saying, “I thought if Aamir is interested in some character it might have some potential. And I saw that hunger in Saif's eyes; he was desperate to shed that lover boy image.”
Saif Ali Khan also won a Filmfare Award for the character of Langda Tyagi.
